AUGUST 15, 2008 - NEW INFORMATION about Carnival's new reclassification of their cabin categories. Carnival Cruise Lines has made it's presence know in the cruise industry as "The Fun Ships". Did Carnival plan on being known as "the Fun Ships"? From my history lessons about Carnival, it was an accident which dates back to the first Carnival ship, the Mardi Gras. On it's maiden voyage from Miami, full of travel industry personnel and journalists, the Mardi Gras hit a sandbar coming back into port. A heads-up Hotel Director came up with the solution of pacifying the guests... he opened all the bars - and let the liquor flow FREELY! Needless to say, when the ship docked, and the journalists on the dock were taking note, many of the guests "danced" off the ship - and the legend was born! This worked out well for Carnival since that tag line has kept Carnival as a leader for over 30 years. But even with such a famous image, many people confuse Carnival with "college-age, spring breakers". What they don't know is that Carnival has moved away from that image and caters to a more "family-oriented" clientele. Ever since the first of the Spirit Class ships (Carnival Spirit - 2001) hit the waters, Carnival has been expanding it's image to multi-generational cruises (where 3 or 4 generations of a family travel together). This has worked well for Carnival whose new target clientele are between the ages of 25 and 54. Where can you find the "college-age, spring breakers"? Typically on the Holiday and Fantasy Class ships, due to their smaller size and shorter itineraries, they have become the idea "get-a-way" for college-age travelers, those on a budget, or can't take much time from work. Want to avoid the "college-age, spring breakers"? Look into the larger ships, longer itineraries (7 days or longer) and travel outside of college vacation times.
